OVERVIEW

The SAT Reasoning Test, given by College Board and accepted at nearly all colleges in America, is an essential step in every student's college preparation process. However, if you wait until your junior year in high school to prepare for the SAT, it is too late to achieve your best score, and early preparation for SAT becoming more and more popular as college admission gets more competitive every year. One of the best ways to prepare for the SAT is to take the practice test given by the very same organization that administers the SAT - Preliminary SAT given by the College Board. Prime Education offers 12-week courses during the school year and 8-week courses that focus on teaching the students how to take standardized test effectively.

The PSAT is divided into 3 sections - Critical Reading, Math, and Writing. The format for each section is:

Critical Reading: Two 25-minute multiple-choice sections.
Math: Two 25-minute sections multiple-choice and student grid-in questions.
Writing: One 30-minute multiple-choice section.

Each section is scored on a scale of 20-80. The student is awarded one point for each correct answer in the multiple-choice section, and he or she is penalized one-forth of a point for each incorrect answer. The student does not gain or lose any point for omitting a question. (In the Math section, incorrect answers for student grid-in questions are not penalized.) For each section, the points are added up, then the raw score in converted into a scaled score.

PSAT is a good barometer to measure your aptitude in preparation for the SAT, and we recommend that students start preparing for and taking the PSAT in their freshmen year in high school. With so many different tests to take during the few years in high school, getting and early start is critical to successful college preparation. We at Prime Education strive to given students the most comprehensive view of the entire PSAT and SAT process, from academic knowledge that is required for the test to the strategies and techniques for successful test-taking, and our program is designed to coincide with the actual PSAT test dates to maximize the effectiveness of their training.

TUITION AND SCHEDULE

CRITICAL READING

The PSAT course is broken into two segments. The first segment starts our by teaching students about the format of the test and its questions. Students are taught about each part of the Critical Reading section, the number of questions each part contains, and how the test is scored. Students then will do practice problems for each portion. They will memorize the most commonly used words in the PSAT tests and learn how to break down a word and deduce their meanings. Students will answer sentence completions and how to use context clues to find the relationship in the answer choices. They will also analyze reading passages to find the main theme and the mood of the passage, and the point of view of the author. In addition, students will learn how to manage their time efficiently during a timed test, how to make educated guesses by eliminating answer choices, and other test-taking strategies and techniques.

In the second segment, students will practice for the real test by taking timed tests in a variety of ways. Initially, each student is given a full PSAT with all 3 sections to measure his or her aptitude. During the first 4 weeks students practice each individual multiple-choice section with the instructor keeping time to first get accustomed to taking a timed test. In the second 4-week period, students practice the entire Critical Reading section in one sitting to increase their endurance and concentration. In the final month leading up to the actual PSAT test date, students will take a full PSAT practice test every week so that they will be at the peak of their performance when they take the real test.

Throughout the entire course, students will continuously memorize vocabulary words and read newspapers to sharpen their critical reading skills.

MATH

The PSAT Math, like the SAT Math course, is broken into three segments. Students first start by being taught about the format of the test and the test questions. Students are taught about each part of the Math section, the number of questions each part contains, how the test is scored, and how to answer the student-response grid-in questions. The course then focuses on the academic mathematical knowledge that is required for the PSAT Math section. PSAT Math covers topics from Algebra I and basic Geometry. Students will be taught what is on the test and how to solve problems of each topic.

The second segment teaches the students the test-taking strategies and techniques. Students who have not trained to take standardized tests struggle with time management. In PSAT Math, students will learn and train to manage their time efficiently throughout each part of the section. They will also learn other test-taking skills such as how to identify each type of problem and how to eliminate answer choices and make intelligent guesses. Our goal is to familiarize each student to the format of each type of question that appears on the PSAT, and to give them the proper tools to solve the problem quickly and accurately.

In the last segment, students will practice for the real test by taking timed tests in a variety of ways.

WRITING CLINIC

The Writing course will be broken into two portions - a grammar portion and an essay portion. The PSAT does not contain an essay portion in its Writing section, but we feel that to adequately prepare for the SAT, a student must start practicing how to write academic essays from the PSAT level.

The grammar portion is for the PSAT Writing multiple-choice section, and it will contain 3 sections. As in the other 2 sections, the students first start by learning the format and the scoring of the test. The first section focuses on the grammar knowledge and will review everything from sentence structure and punctuation to rewriting sentences to be more clear and concise.

The second segment will teach students test-taking strategies and techniques, such as time management and taking smart guesses.

The final segment will give students a chance to prepare for the real PSAT by taking timed practice tests, in formats of first, just the Writing multiple-choice section, and then the full PSAT with all Critical Reading, Math, and Writing sections.

The second portion is for the essay section, and it will be broken into two segments. The first segment will focus on the skills of essay writing. Students will start from the very basics of writing. They will learn how to write proper sentences and paragraphs, study proper grammar and usage, and practice writing clear and well-written sentences. At the end of this portion, they will be able to form paragraphs with a clear main idea and logical thought progression that leads to a strong conclusion.

In the next segment, students will practice progress to writing a complete essay with a logical structure and coherent theme. They will expand the scope of their writing and put together the paragraphs that they have formed in the first portion to create a complete essay that conveys a clear idea.
