Math

Mathematics is a field of study that can be applied in fields such as science, engineering, surveying, medicine, and economics. Mathematical skills are essential for success in not just classrooms, but in the real world as well. We at Prime Education believe that laying down a strong foundation in mathematics from an early age is important to the academic growth of a student.

In 2004, The New Jersey Department of Education introduced a newly revised Core Curriculum Content Standards which has since been adapted by schools statewide. Prime Education's intensive 12-week 36-hour course focuses on the topics outlined in the Mathematical Core Curriculum Content Standards by using materials specifically tailored towards New Jersey's Content Standards. Students follow a clear and robust study track outlined in the syllabus. The students are given a quiz each week and a test every 4 weeks to measure their progress.

Math I

Math I is for students who have completed New Jersey Department of Education's 2nd grade level mathematics standards. The course will strengthen the arithmetic skills of the students and introduce them to fractions, providing a solid foundation for students to build upon in their future.

Before entering Math I, students should be proficient in:

  • counting and ordering whole numbers whole numbers up to 999.
  • working with coins up to $1.00.
  • adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers with regrouping.

By the completion of Math I, student will learn the following:

  • Counting and ordering whole numbers through hundred thousands.
  • Odd and even numbers.
  • Addition and subtraction using 3 and 4-digit numbers.
  • Multiplication table and multiplication using 2 and 3-digit numbers.
  • Simple division with remainders using 2 and 3-digit numbers.
  • Application problems involving addition, subtraction, and multiplications of currency and quantity.
  • Application problems involving addition and subtraction of time.
  • Introduction to fractions and fractions with single-digit denominators.
  • Units of measurements in distance and volume.
  • Grouping and Venn diagrams.

Math II

Math II is for students who have completed New Jersey Department of Education's 3rd grade level mathematics standards, and it will build upon the foundation that has been laid out in Math I. Students will learn more about fractions and will also be introduced to new concepts of decimals, areas of simple geometric shapes, and elementary statistics.

By the completion of Math II, students will learn the following:

  • Counting and ordering whole numbers through millions.
  • Addition and subtraction using 5-digit numbers.
  • Multiplication table and multiplication using 3 and 4-digit numbers.
  • Long division with using 3 and 4-digit numbers.
  • Equality and inequality.
  • Multiples and factors.
  • Addition and subtraction of fractions with same denominators.
  • Multiplying simple fractions.
  • Introduction to decimals and simple decimals.
  • Units of measurements in weights and area.
  • Bar graphs, line graphs, and circle graphs.
  • Introduction to mean, median, and mode.

Math III

Math III is for students who have completed New Jersey Department of Education's 4th grade level mathematics standards. Students will advance their skills in fractions and decimals, learn about percents and probability, and be introduced to basics of Geometry.

By the completion of Math III, students will learn the following:

  • Order of operations.
  • Factors and prime factors.
  • Fraction skills in using simplest form, mixed numbers, and improper fractions.
  • Multiplying and simplifying advanced fractions.
  • Finding common denominator.
  • Adding and subtracting mixed numbers and fractions with different denominators.
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals up to the hundredths.
  • Percents and converting among fractions decimals, and percents.
  • Measurements using metric and standard units.
  • Advanced problems involving mean, median, and mode.
  • Probability of an event occurring and combination of events.
  • Introduction to Geometry.

Math IV

Math IV is for students who have completed New Jersey Department of Education's 5th grade level mathematics standards. Students will be introduced to new concepts such as classification of numbers, exponents ratios, rates, and permutations, and strengthen their problem solving skills in preparation for Algebra.

By the completion of Math IV, students will learn the following:

  • Classification of numbers: real numbers, integers and negatives.
  • Problem solving skills requiring advanced arithmetic operations with fractions, decimals, and percents.
  • Application problems involving metric and standard units of distance, volume, area, and weight and conversions among them.
  • Exponents of second and third power.
  • Ratios and rates.
  • Permutations of probability with and without replacements.
  • Graphing inequalities on a number line.

Math V

Math V is for students who have completed all the topics outlined in the Math IV curriculum. Math V will focus mostly on Algebra I and selected topics in Geometry. With it's accelerated pace, the course will provide new challenges to students while covering each topic thoroughly. To students with aspiration of applying to the Bergen County Academies the following year, Math V will give a solid foundation for them to build upon.

By the completion of Math V, students will learn the following:

  • Classification of numbers: rational and irrational numbers.
  • Exponents and roots.
  • Absolute value.
  • Scientific notation.
  • Introduction to algebra and variables.
  • Terms, expressions, and combining like terms.
  • Associative, commutative, and distributive properties.
  • Solving equations with one variable.
  • Solving equations with multiple variables for a variable in terms of other variables.
  • Graphing linear functions.
  • Solving area and perimeter problems using variables.
  • Geometry concepts involving triangles, quadrilaterals, perpendicular lines, parallel lines, and coordinate geometry.

Math VI

Math VI is for students who have completed all the topics outlined in the Math V curriculum. Math VI will cover most of Algebra I and some Geometry. As with Math V, Math VI will also offer a more accelerated pace than standard math curriculums to get the students ready for high school mathematics and also PSAT and SAT standardized test preparation.

By the completion of Math VI, students will learn the following:

  • Solving complex equations for a single variable.
  • Solving a system of equations for multiple variables.
  • Congruent polygons and corresponding angles and sides.
  • Using algebraic equations to solve applications involving volumes of three-dimensional objects.
  • Characteristics of linear graphs.
  • Quadratic equations and functions.
  • Advanced probability problems involving permutations.
